The posts are still solid and set firmly (posts are the backbone); the damage is localized, like a few broken panels or one section knocked down; the fence is relatively young and the rest of the run is good; or it is gate hardware, one of the most common easily fixed failures.
Replacement usually makes sense when
The posts are rotted, rusted, or shifted (once posts go, repairs are temporary, the number one reason we recommend replacement); a large share of the run is failing; the fence is near end of life anyway; or you want a material upgrade, for example moving from storm-damaged wood to low-maintenance vinyl (/vinyl-fence-installation/) or corrosion-resistant aluminum (/aluminum-fence-installation/).
